The Anatomy of a Great Grilled Cheese

25 Jan

Sometimes the cakery makes things besides cake.

Sometimes, I just like to make things that make me want to nom nom nom. Like grilled cheese.

Making a great grilled cheese involves four things..although one of them is harder for me to come by than the others.

  1. Hearty bread—I used Wegmans Omega-3 100 % whole wheat bread in an attempt to make this healthier.*
  2. High quality cheese—You absolutely cannot use anything that is store-brand or come individually wrapped in plastic. I prefer two slices of Kraft Deli Deluxe American Singles, without the orange dye.
  3. Butter or butter-like spread—Real butter makes this divine, but if you want to be healthy, Brummel & Brown Yogurt Butter is what’s in my fridge.
  4. Patience—Yeahhhhhh still searching to find where I can buy this.

If you have all the pieces, you get something that looks like this:

Two slices living in harmony.

You’ll notice that I indicated features worth mentioning in the grilled cheese above. The trick to the crust involves items 1, 3 & 4 from the list, while the cheesy part involves items 2 & 4.

If you set your stove too high because you want to eat your grilled cheese ASAP and don’t have any of item 4 on hand, you’ll burn the crust and the cheese won’t melt. And no one likes non-melty burned grilled cheese. I cooked the above for approximately** 2 minutes 30 seconds on each side, with my gas stove burner on 2/3.

At this point you are probably saying, “Seriously, 5 minutes? you have trouble waiting 5 measly minutes?” To which cakerypapery says, “5 minutes is a long time…when you’re hungry and have no one to talk to besides your cat…”

Happy grilling!

*Don’t be fooled by bread that claims to be “multi-grain” or simply “wheat.” Multi-grain only means that the bread contains more than one grain, i.e. corn and wheat. Unless a bread is marked “whole grain” or “whole wheat,” it’s not the real thing.

**I have a confession. I left the one side on too long and too hot. The reverse of my grilled cheese is a bit crispy. Like I said…I need more of item 4.
